Minutes before 8 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, above the island of Oahu, Hawaii, a Japanese bomber nosed through the clouds toward Pearl Harbor.
The wave of fighters that followed rained death and destruction on the peaceful harbor, shoving the country into World War II.
The next morning, Will Foard was sitting in class at a military prep school when he heard the news.
“It was a real shock because we weren't going to have any more wars,” – or at least, that's what he was told, Foard remembers. “We just didn't think anybody would attack us because we were so strong.”
More than $15,000 worth of food went from an assembly line of volunteers into 800 boxes Thursday morning to be given out just before Christmas.
The Salvation Army had food boxes assembled and packed by volunteers from Wes Jensen’s Sunday school class at First Baptist Church in Hendersonville and members of the Air Force JROTC at East Henderson High. Boxes were also packed Friday morning.

Volunteer signup for the annual Bounty of Bethlehem Christmas dinner will be held from 8 a.m. to noon today in the Immaculata Catholic School gym at 711 N. Buncombe St., Hendersonville. The Bounty volunteer call-in line is 828-693-5115 and is operational through Dec. 20. The number is for volunteers who do not come to the volunteer signup day to find available jobs during the week of Bounty.
